Where Will You Spend Eternity?
Every human being will live forever. The question is where?
Heaven or Hell?
The real key to heaven or hell is in your hand right now. No one is sent to heaven. No one is sent to hell. Our eternal home is determined by the choice we make today.
What are the priorities in your life? Most of us spend our time obtaining a good education. We prepare for this life by hard work and much study. Preparing for a profession is good. Education is good. Working hard to take care of our families is good. So much time is spent in preparing for this life. How much time are we spending in preparing for eternal life?
If you walk through a cemetery you may be surprised to see how many people have passed away at a very young age. Tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone. If your heart stopped beating right now, where would you go? The Bible says:
2 Cor 5:8
8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.(NKJ)
Can you be confident that if you would be absent from the body that you would go to heaven?
Most people believe that heaven is something, which we obtain by performing more good deeds than bad. That is not what the Bible tells us:
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.(NKJ)
All of our preparation and hard work and focus in life are wasted if it is only on things of this world. We spend seventy or eighty years here. How many do we spend in heaven or hell? Where are our priorities?
10 The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.(NKJ)
How much preparation do we make for eternal life?
I came to the United States when I was only nineteen years old. I spent my life seeking after success, a better life for my family and ways to make money. Life slipped away. It seems like such a short time since I was nineteen years old. One night I had a dream. I was dying. My whole life passed before my eyes. There was nothing good to say about me. I was overcome with the emptiness of my life. Even though the world would have considered me a good husband and father, a hard working family man. I knew that night that if I had died I would have gone to hell. I had lived my whole life without any need or faith in God. I thought I could take care of myself. I didn’t need God. I wasn’t a bad person. Thank God for that dream. No one can believe how quickly life passes by everyone.
12 So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.(NKJ)
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse. (NKJ)
This Scripture shows that God has been revealed to all of us through His creation. There is no excuse for anyone to claim that they did not know God. Many choose their own selfish ways. God has given us a free will to choose Him or ourselves. There really is no other choice. A perfect example of God’s provision and man’s choice is in the desert experience in the book of Numbers:
4 Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way.
5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses: "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread."
6 So the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died.
7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD that He take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people.
8 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live."
9 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.(NKJ)
The reason these people were in this situation was because they were so ungrateful to God. God had provided food, clothing, water and a fire to lead them by night and a cloud by day to shelter them from the sun.
God had chosen the Israelites to be his own people. Their sin had brought them to a place where they were being attacked by poisonous snakes and dying. They needed a Savior. God used this to show all man, for all time that He had a plan to save mankind from sin.
He commanded Moses to make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole for them to look at and be saved. These people had a choice. They could use their own remedies for snake bite and try to save themselves or they could just look to God’s solution and live. This is a simple picture of what God has done for us.
Jesus Christ was raised up on the cross of Calvary. He lived as the perfect Lamb of God. His life was without sin. When they raised Jesus up on that Cross, he paid for your sins and mine, once and for all. In order for us to be saved and receive the free gift of eternal life we must only look to that Cross and believe that Jesus paid for our sins. The only way to heaven is faith in His payment for our sin. No matter what we do, all the good works in the world will not pay for one tiny sin. Only Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, who never sinned, can pay for sin. That is why we must look to Him in faith, then we will receive eternal life. Just as the Israelites looked to the serpent on the pole for life, we must look to Jesus on the Cross for eternal life.
14 "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15 "that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. NKJ)
Many men think the way to live is to accumulate things, but Jesus showed the Pharisees the truth.
14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him.
15 And He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God. (NKJ)
Jesus told this story;
19 "There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.
20 "But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate,
21 "desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 "So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
23 "And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 "Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.'
25 "But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.
26 'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.'
27 "Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house,
28 'for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.'
29 "Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.'
30 "And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'
31 "But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead (NKJ)
Jesus told this story. It shows that hell is a real place. It gives us a clear picture of anguish for all eternity. No one in their right mind would choose hell, yet people are going there every day. People think it won’t happen to them. They think they know better than the Bible, which tells us, there is awareness of your surroundings. There is torment in hell. There is thirst and pain. They can see those who are enjoying the good things of paradise.
17 "Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it." (NKJ)
This Scripture gives us a sure key to eternal life. The Bible is called good news for that reason. It is something that everyone can receive. It is not so difficult that we have to spend our whole lives worrying whether or not we are good enough or if we have done what is required to receive eternal life. Since heaven is a free gift, it just requires that we receive that gift of Jesus death for our sins, without question. We have full assurance that when we die, we will spend eternity with Jesus who saved us from eternal damnation. It is so simple that a child can understand. This makes it difficult for many adults because we believe we must do something to earn anything. If we can just become like that little child before a Holy God, who has made it possible for us to spend eternity with Him, then we can open that present of eternal life, like a child at Christmas.
Remember that Jesus died between two thieves. At first they both mocked Jesus then one said:
39 “If You are the Christ save Yourself and us. “
40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?
41 "And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong."
42 Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom."
43 And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." (NKJ)
If Jesus could say to that man who was a thief that he would be with Jesus in Paradise that very day then that proves that the only thing you must do to receive eternal life is recognize that you are a sinner and that Jesus is Lord and King. No good works or other requirements are seen in this story. The man was a thief. He only saw Jesus as his Savior. This is all we have to do.
Some people ask “How do you know that what you believe is right”?
This is an important question. First of all I had been raised with “Religion”. Religion was a ritual. It taught me the golden rule and the Ten Commandments and other useful and moral things. However, Religion did not change my life or my actions. It made me aware of sin but did not give me any assurance of eternal life or any power to lead a good life. However, when I received God’s free gift of eternal life I knew that I would go to heaven when I die. He also placed within me a strong desire to do what is right and the power to stand strong in Him.
God has given us a place inside our hearts that is empty. We will go through life trying to fill this emptiness with things, people, money, happiness, anything we can stuff into ourselves. Nothing fills that place because it is a God shaped vacuum. Only God himself can fill it. When we receive the free gift of eternal life we also receive peace, love, joy and all the fruit of the Spirit which will grow in our hearts over time.
Religion is man-made. Christianity is not a religion. It is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. You will never again be alone. He will be with you always. A present help in time of trouble. He never promised that we would be without problems
He assures us that He will be with us through the problems. Now it is your choice. If you have never received the free gift of eternal life, receive it now by saying a simple prayer. If you give Him your life with a sincere heart you will never again have to worry about eternity. One of the saddest Scriptures I have ever read is this:
20 "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved!" (NKJ)
Do not let the harvest pass you by. Give your life to Jesus today:
Lord Jesus Christ
I am sorry for my sins
I know you died on the Cross for me
I give you my life today and ask you to help me to live for you.
Thank you Jesus for saving me and making me the person that you want me to be.
When you give your life to Jesus he will make it possible to lead the kind of life that is pleasing to Him. We no longer keep the Commandments because of fear of Hell. We keep the commandments because of gratitude for the free gift of eternal life. True gratitude to Jesus for coming down to this earth, living, dying and rising again so that we will be free to spend eternity with Him.
Thank You Jesus
